The St. Tammany Coroner’s Office has identified the victim in a multiple-car wreck that shut down the southbound lanes of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway for more than three hours earlier this week as 53-year-old Michael Timothy of Metairie. The crash happened at the 14.5-mile marker on the southbound side of the bridge. A northbound Motorist Assistance Patrol vehicle reported a possible breakdown on the southbound span at 4:11 p.m. Three minutes later, officers arrived to find a three-car crash blocking both lanes. One car had broken down and another had stopped when a third vehicle hit them. The victim died at the scene. The southbound bridge was closed from 4:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. The northbound side of the bridge remained open, but rubbernecking and people using their phones to take video caused slowdowns all the way to the south shore.
