US-11, with its 92 year old bridge, has been closed for year and doesn’t look to reopen anytime soon. After missing a deadline to reopen in April of last year, and then a few others, the latest potential reopening of January 2020 has been backed up to some time this summer.
It began as a $28-million, four month project to renovate the bridge operator’s shack at the drawbridge, and install a new roadway. But officials say the repair crews have encountered unexpected rotten wood, disintegrating electrical equipment, structural problems and more. Replacement of control shack and roadway have been slowed by needed fixes to existing equipment, some of it dating back to the 1920’s.
The closure of US-11 has only put more commuters in traffic on the I-10 Twin Spans.
