The Tangipahoa Parish School Board has granted a certificate of completion for the lighting project at Independence High School’s football field, but the district will also seek remedies to the field damage that officials say happened on the contractor’s watch. The Board agreed to grant the certificate, a legal trigger that allows subcontractors to submit their bills for payment on the job. The parish will withhold payment for items that remain unfinished. Independence-area board member Robin Abrams wanted to know who would be held accountable for getting the field back into playing condition. Three weeks ago, Louisiana High School Athletic Association officials stopped play at the start of a game and forced the Tigers to move to another site, deeming the field unacceptable for game play. Superintendent Melissa Stilley said she will check with the LHSAA for confirmation that the field meets minimum requirements for play. Several board members voiced concern about lost gate revenue and concession sales during this season.
