The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office says they have received numerous calls from residents who were contacted by phone concerning active/open warrants in their name. The caller states they are trying to clear up an outstanding warrant or other legal matter and requests a payment to be made over the telephone. These scammers are now spoofing the Sheriff’s Office phone numbers and/or using names of actual employees of the Sheriff’s Office in an attempt to defraud residents. STPSO does not collect money or clear active warrants over the telephone, and we do not request personal information to be provided over the phone. Earlier this week Sheriff Daniel Edwards reported a similar scam in Tangipahoa in which a victim was swindled out of $16,000.
