Judge Peter Garcia died of heart complications on Tuesday. Garcia, who was elected to the 22nd Judicial District Court in 1996, helped launch specialty courts in the area, and was also one of the main proponents behind Safe Haven, a mental health group on the grounds of the former Southeast Louisiana Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda, his children Meghan, Katie, Melanie, and John, and a host of extended family.
The family invites friends to a wake on Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fielding Funeral Home in Covington. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Covington. Garcia was 66 years old.
