Opponents of the proposal for a hotel/conference center at Fontainebleau State Park by Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser are sending around their summary of the feasibility study of the project.
Among the points they make, is that the park is already profitable, bringing in $1.3 million a year against expenses of $1.2 million. They say if more profit is needed, the entrance fees of $3.00 could be raised to $4 or $5 and/or the fees for the existing cabins and multi-use buildings could go up, which they say would require no risk to the park or the environment.
Another argument against the project involves the Harbor Center, which they quote as perfect for big events, conventions and grand celebrations at the crossroads of three interstate systems, with 1600 hotel rooms accessible to the center, and one exit away from a contemporary, new large-scale shopping area.
Nungesser recently visited Mandeville to answer questions from citizens. He met a mostly hostile crowd opposed to the concept of a new facility within the existing park.
