The Army Corp of Engineers told the state yesterday they did not foresee a need to open the Bonnet Carre Spillway near New Orleans or the Morganza Spillway near Baton Rouge in response to rising rivers.
Meanwhile, closer to home, St. Tammany Government officials and emergency operations personnel continue to monitor any potential impacts of the National Weather Service’s anticipated continued rise of the Pearl River at Pearl River to near 19.0 feet by Wednesday, February 26.The National Weather Service is anticipating the threat of moderate flooding along the lower portions of the West Pearl River, as well as areas south of I-10 and East of Military Road.
Self-service sandbag locations will open Thursday, February 20, and Friday, February 21, after 7 a.m. in the Slidell area at the Fritchie Barn on Hwy. 1090 in Pearl River; and the Airport Barn on Grantham College Drive in Slidell. Sand and bags will be provided for residents to fill. Residents should bring shovels; and be prepared to fill and load the sandbags.
The Flood Warning continues for the Pearl River near Pearl River until further notice. At 19.0 feet…expect major flooding of River Gardens and moderate flooding of lower portions in Magnolia Forest Subdivisions. Subdivisions south of I-10 and east of Military Road will be threatened with flooding. The Indian Village Road access to River Oaks Subdivision will be under water at several places.
The Flood Warning continues for the Pearl River Near Bogalusa until further notice. The river will continue rising to near 22.5 feet by Tuesday, February 25, then begin falling. At 22.0 feet…Woodlands and crop acreage along the river will be flooded. The Bogue Chitto Wildlife Management area will be inundated with water. At 21 feet, property east of Highway 21 along Bogalusa Creek will begin to flood. Homes south of Bogalusa Creek and east of Highway 21 will flood.
