A proposal put forward by Mayor Donald Villere last week calls for raising the 5½-foot seawall by 1 foot. The $2 million project is aimed mainly at reducing flood insurance rates in the area. This Wednesday at 6 p.m. there will be a public meeting in the Mandeville City Council chambers for residents to see what is being proposed. Villere said the increased height would not prevent flooding during tropical weather, which would require gates and pumps. But he said the work could mean a change in flood zone designation that would reduce annual flood insurance premiums. Potential savings could be realized for people living south of Monroe Street, which is several blocks north of the lake.
