The Hammond Police Department has released the 2019 Uniform Crime Report (UCR) and has included the crime statistics within the city limits from the past three years. While murder cases saw the most significant increase from one in 2018 to three in 2019, violent crimes in every other category decreased. All three murders in 2019 were solved by detectives within 24 hours of their occurrence and had suspects in custody. Forcible rapes had the largest decrease from 32 in 2018 down to 13 in 2019, or by 59%. Aggravated assaults and robberies also decreased by 40% and 27% respectively. In non-violent crimes, auto theft decreased significantly from 116 to 66, or by 43%. Larceny/theft and burglaries also decreased by 8% and 16% respectively. Chief Edwin Bergeron, Jr. said the reduction in crime could be attributed to many things, including the hard work and dedication of the officers of Hammond Police Department.
