Tragedy brought the Northshore to a stop on Friday as a well-respected Mandeville police officer was killed in the line of duty and another injured. Shortly after 2 p.m. the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Mandeville Police Department to investigate a shooting that took the life of a Mandeville Police Department Captain Vincent “Vinny” Liberto Jr. A suspect, identified as 21-year-old Mark Spicer, of Covington, has been charged with one count each of first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, aggravated flight and more. A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash. The incident began when an officer initiated a traffic stop and the driver refused, starting a pursuit along U.S. 190. The suspect’s vehicle crashed into the ditch along the U.S. 190 southbound off ramp to Louisiana Highway 22. As the incident unfolded, both Mandeville Police Department officers were shot by the suspect. Accounts have been opened for the family of Captain Liberto at Resource Bank and Hancock Whitney.
