On Friday night, shortly after 8:30 PM, Troopers from State Police Troop L responded to a fatal crash involving several vehicles on I-12 westbound near US 11. The crash has claimed the life of 71-year-old Beverly E. Chaignaud of Lacombe. The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as the victim’s Toyota Camry travelled westbound in the right lane. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle drifted onto the right shoulder and struck an unoccupied Nissan Pathfinder then veered back onto I-12 and was struck by a Freightliner Tractor-Trailer traveling westbound in the right lane. Chaignaud sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Tractor-Trailer received minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. As part of the ongoing investigation, blood samples were collected for scientific analysis. Both drivers were properly restrained.
