A record number of voters cast their ballots early in St. Tammany Parish. What would happen after the votes were counted on Election Day?
Parish President Pat Brister lost to former Covington Mayor Mike Cooper, with Cooper getting at least 60% of the vote. Brister had touted her accomplishments, like highway funding and Safehaven as a reason to grant her four more years. Cooper pointed out her failed tax renewals and consistent traffic problems as some of the reasons he should be elected.
Incumbent Sheriff Randy Smith was challenged by former Covington Police Chief Tim Lentz. Smith was reelected with at least 57% of the vote.
In the Senate District 11 race between Reid Falconer and Patrick McMath it was McMath who got the win after Falconer won the first time they squared off. McMath got 55% of the vote.
In the State Representative race of the 89th District between Vince Liuzza and Richard Nelson it was Nelson getting the win.
The 22nd JDC Division F seat was up for grabs. Vincent Lobello got about 54% of the vote and defeated Harold Bartholomew
In the race for the 1st Supreme Court District Will Crain defeated Hans Liljeberg.
Bryan Haggerty and Tracey Powell squared off for Slidell City Court. It was close but Haggerty got the win.
Early voting was huge. More than 35,000 people voted early in the general election, as compared to 26,000 in the primary. Hotly contested local races, as well as a close Governor’s race, seemed to be driving the turnout.
