It is Election Day tomorrow and a record number of voters have already cast their ballots in St. Tammany Parish. More than 35,000 people voted early in the general election, as compared to 26,000 in the primary. Hotly contested local races, as well as a close Governor’s race, seem to be driving the turnout.
The race for Parish president pits two-term incumbent Pat Brister against former Covington Mayor Mike Cooper. Brister has touted her accomplishments, like highway funding and Safehaven as a reason to grant her four more years. Cooper has pointed out failed tax renewals and consistent traffic problems as some of the reasons he should be elected.
One term incumbent Sheriff Randy Smith is being challenged by former Covington Police Chief Tim Lentz. There are also several close judicial races on the ballot including one for Supreme Court, the 22nd JDC and Slidell City Court.
