A community service was held for former St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister at the Church of the King in Mandeville yesterday. Brister died suddenly after battling cancer. Brister was known as a trailblazer for women in politics, taking on the issues of mental health and infrastructure locally. Brister‘s sons and grandchildren served as pallbearers as she was remembered for a long list of achievements. Officials said at least part of Brister’s legacy will be Safe Haven, where the parish took an untimely closure of a hospital and turned it a blessing for the North Shore. Brister is also credited with securing millions of dollars recently for widening I 12 after a series of deadly accidents. This was a public remembrance for Brister. A personal service for family and friends will be held Wednesday. Gov. John Bel Edwards ordered flags to half-staff until sunset Monday. Pat Brister was 73.
