Thursday morning, just before 8 am, the Hammond Police Department was notified of an accident on I-12 westbound at mile marker 41, involving four vehicles. Upon arrival, HPD Officers interviewed the driver of the large box truck who stated there were vehicles getting onto the road from the shoulder, which caused him to slow down and everyone behind him slowed to a stop. A black Audi was changing lanes (from left to right) and rear-ended a Kia pushing it into a Toyota van and then into the box truck. The Kia burst into flames while people were still in the vehicle, but fortunately bystanders were able to get them out. Hammond Fire Department extinguished the fire and treated victims until Acadian Ambulance arrived on scene. Acadian treated five people on scene and transported all of them to North Oaks Medical Center. All but two people have been discharged. As of last night those two were in critical but stable condition.
